Alation – State of data culture report 2022 Q1

Quarterly Alation produces a report on the state of data culture in organisations. As data is integral to AI, statements like this are critical in understanding the framework behind implementing AI. Alation is passionate about data culture and works with 1/4 of Fortune 100 companies.

Key finding 1 – Private investment growth

Private investment and cross-country collaboration on AI. This has increased 5 x since 2010.

Thoughts and insights: There are so many opportunities for using AI. Investors are seeing this opportunity and continue to invest. It will be interesting to see if this level of investment continues through 2022.

Key finding 2 – Affordable AI

The cost to train an image classification system has decreased by 63% in 4 years.

Thoughts and insights: As more vendors and technology appear, the price will drop. We should also continue to see a bit of competition in the stack architecture as cloud suppliers look to attract all forms of AI.

Key finding 3 – Rise of AI ethics

x5 increase in the publications talking about AI ethics in last four years.

Thoughts and insights: I have noticed a considerable interest in this area. This is a good thing; as more is talked about AI governance, more will become developed and adopted. This will mean a more robust and better AI for the future.

Thoughts and insights: In the past five years I have noticed a considerable interest in this area. Ethics and governance are essential areas. As AI is being adopted in most industry verticals, we must have the fullest confidence in the data and the people it serves. This will help strengthen AI and data use for future years if addressed early.

Key finding 5 – Better capabilities of language models

A 280 billion parameter model developed in 2021 shows a 29% increase in elicited toxicity over a 117 million parameter model considered state of the art as of 2018

Thoughts and insights: Language models are exceedingly popular, especially when processing unstructured data. The capabilities are increasing along with the amount of training parameters. These allow powerful intelligent capabilities especially if combined with other models.

In summary
The report has been produced for many years. It does seem like the report is getting more and more detailed, including more broader data from private, academic and non profit sources. I really like the drilling down into specific areas of AI especially for different regions of the world.
