Baidu (The Chinese equivalent of Google) has invested heavily into AI over the years. This move is paying huge dividends with $4.38 billion revenue in first quarter, beating Wall Street estimates. More here

Google researchers are proposing a new way Google will search using AI technology (BERT or GPT-3) This will see a huge change in search architecture for over 10 years. More here
AI-enabled power microgrids
In the Netherlands, they are already using small, decentralised power hubs with AI to manage cleaner power. Where is has been used, energy costs for users have dropped by 11%, producers have had a 14% increase in revenue as well annual carbon saving up to 30 million tonnes. Win win all-round More here

Explosion in Tiny ML
With the explosion of IoT devices. (Said to reach 23.6 billion by 2026, it is said that ‘TinyML device shipments to grow to 2.5 billion in 2030, up from 15 million in 2020. TinyML are little Machine Leaning (ML) chipsets that process data locally. They are designed to be low cost and low energy consumption which make them so useful. Interesting research by ABI research. Google AI tool can help patients identify 288 skin conditions using trained data from 65,000 images. Future of telemedicine or doctor in your pocket? This was featured on the Google I/O conference. Amazing technology that is only going to get more popular for self diagnosis. More here

Although ‘printed’ a couple of months ago, this is well worth a read. Gartner – A global leading research and advisory firm has released top data trends for 2021. AI tops the list along with composable data and analytics, data fabric, small data, XOps and more. More here
EU legislation on AI on the horizon
On 21 April 2021, the European Commission released a proposal for the European Union (EU) regulation on Artificial Intelligence.
