AI solves autonomous vehicle weather issues

One of the biggest challenges for AV’s (Autonomous Vehicles) is dealing with harsh weather. University of Oxford and Bogazici University (Turkey) have developed a unique AI system to allow self-driving cars to cope in bad weather like, rain, fog now etc. It is hoped that this new technology will help AV’s become a safer reality.

The technology

They have developed a self-supervised deep learning model for ego-motion estimation. This is  combined with many other datasets from many sensors and linked to detailed mapping information.

Commercial thinking

Commercially this research is potentially worth a huge amount to the rising number of AV companies around the world. This is a major step towards safer AV’s resulting in reducing adoption barriers.  I can see this technology could be leveraged through transport and other industry verticals.

Great work University of Oxford and Bogazici University.
